I want to have a device that can run 24*7 for receiving mail and do some other important tasks. Please tell me what kind of device would be the proper choice for this: a workstation or a server?

A server. Seriously. It's that simple. HP.com, Dell.com and Sun.com have some great hardware just waiting for you.
