Is it possible (and how?) to change what the home directory is in a hosting environment? For instance, my current home directory is /home/accountname/, but I would like to develop a second version of the site in /home/accountname/cms/ (to avoid filename conflict, etc.), and then make the domain point there. Do I have to do that through the domain registrar, or can I do that in cPanel?

If your host has it enabled, cPanel offers what they call "Add on domains". These domains will exist in a subdirectory of your current home directory, but be accessable via thier own address.

Hrm, OK, but will that work if the domain I want to "add" on is the domain associated with the account? – bccarlso Jan 6 '10 at 0:23

What you might want to do, if possible, is change the domain currently associated with your account. Some hosts allow this, others don't.

If they do allow it, use a subdomain if you don't want to buy a new domain, and simply use your existing domain with the "add-on" domain.

If not, and you really still want to do it, you could cancel your current account (after backing up all your files) and create a new one under a different domain. Then, after restoring your files, use your existing domain with the "add-on."
