This place is frustrating sometimes. Did you read my question? RAID does not make sense for Hadoop - so JBOD is the only choice. It's a question about that exact problem. Metadata replication on a single disk or multiple disks and how this works in practice. I know that I can buy more disks. Sorry...

@cstamas: Can also agree that your answer is spot on - if a drive survives a full run of badblocks -w (3x writing, 3x reading) without creating new bad sectors I'll keep it. Otherwise it's just too broken to be used somewhere.
