The only limit is when your name server runs out of memory. It's the same as the limit for the number of subdomains like *.com: 253 characters, total.

comment Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock’
You need to check your MySQL error logs to see why the server isn't starting.

comment How do you locally redirect DNS requests in a *NIX environment
This isn't even doable; DNS doesn't know or care about http vs. https.

comment can i remove debian apt cache dir
The point of keeping them is so that if an upgrade breaks the package for you, you can downgrade to get it working again.

comment Mount shows as swap instead of ext3
ugh, (a) that should be with -o ro and (b) running fsck first is a good idea.

lsof +L1 can sometimes work better than that grep...

comment Differences between SSH's tunnels and OpenVPN
Tunneling TCP over TCP is exceptionally bad, as it really confuses the inner TCP's congestion control.

comment Do routers have IP Addresses?
@Marcin: A router need not have two interfaces. It could be routing between multiple (tagged) VLANs on one interface, or even multiple subnets on the same VLAN & interface.

comment Do routers have IP Addresses?
Arguably, a device with two ip unnumbered serial interfaces & one (numbered) ethernet might still be called a router, especially if it is deciding which serial interface to send the packet down based on destination IP address. </nitpick>

comment How to Setup Ubuntu Mail Server with Google Apps?
Does Ubuntu use postfix, or exim? If its exim like Debian, then dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config should give you the option of sending mail through a smarthost, and you should be able top configure that to gmail.

comment How to boot Linux from a 16gb USB flash drive
I wouldn't expect a bootable ext2 to be difficult on usbflash, but since I've never done it, I can't comment. However, why not just use a small (~64–128mb) fat32 for /boot and then the rest as ext2?

Is your MySQL configured to bind to a certain IP address? If so, is that IP address present?

comment VMWare Virtual Machine mysql / apache services not working the same after a VM copy
Please clarify: (1) how did you do this file copy, and did you copy the virtual machine image, or did you copy the files that Linux sees, inside the virtual machine (/etc, /bin, /usr, etc.)? (2) What error messages does MySQL give when refusing to start (check log files)?

comment Network port mounting bracket/box
Ummm, I'm pretty sure old work box effectively means mount to sheetrock; new work effectively means mount to stud... Why can't you use new work boxes? And what's wrong with mounting the sheetrock?

comment Ubuntu file permissions
Check 'dmesg'; it may say while the filesystem is read-only. The message will hopefully be near the bottom.
