@Sane I too also thought I knew SMTP inside and out and is why I posted this to be sure I wasn't missing something. I configure postfix and work with Exim and qmail regularly and did not know this.

Sounds like a homework question. You can have all functionality on a single server; just note that there is a single point of failure for everything. 50 computers on a single network is bad practice; there will be network congestion.
