comment User Environment variables vs. System Environment variables. Does System Variable always override User variable?
JosefZ: yes, I added the two environment variables, one USER the other SYSTEM, both with the same name, using teh Windows 7 GUI similar to the screens shown inyour link.

comment User Environment variables vs. System Environment variables. Does System Variable always override User variable?
I rebooted and still when I run "echo %path%" from a cmd.exe window, it displays my system env variable, not the value of the user variable. So, I deleted the User variable, o Admin access, changed my System path variable and the did teh same echo cmd. The updated env value was displayed w/o rebooting. This tells me that USER vars do not override system vars and that a reboot isn't necessary. Neitehr is what I expected.

comment IIS settings mysteriously changing “on ther own”
We proved to ourselves that when the developers use Visual Studio 6 (from the '70s, I think) to modify ASP code on the development web server, that the settings on the Virtual folder get changed as a result.

line 39 sPath = "IIS://" & sServername & "/W3SVC/" & sServerinst line 40 Set oDefSite = GetObject(sPath) interesting sPath= IIS://localhost/W3SVC/1. I thought that this was was a default pg that should work by default.

Anonymous was and is checked, Basic Authentication was not and remains unchecked. Windows authentication was checked and is not unchecked. When I access localhost/localstart.asp I now get the error: Error Type: Microsoft VBScript runtime (0x800A0046). Scripting is enabled. Permission denied: 'GetObject' /localstart.asp, line 40 I'm using iis 5.1 with XP Prof

comment Component Services Security Settings question
It looks like the change will require starting and stopping the MS DTC service. Since this is on a production server, I assume that this means that doing so can stop any application that utilizes distributed db operations. I presume that there is no way to tell if any of the 75 dbs on our server uses MS DTC and if I will effect them , which means I have to request that the chg be performed during a scheduled outage, meaning I will be waiting weeks or months to get my change in. Please comment if you think I am missing an important fact. Thanks!
