More importantly you should check the mysql error log. In a standard installation it should be located in /var/log/ directory. If it is not there check the configuration file for user specified location.

If you want to create this tunnel from in a non-interactive way, you can use the ssh-copy-id someuser@public_server_ip_or_domain command to copy your users public key to somuser's authorized_keys file on public server. This way password will not be asked on your following logins.

I agree with jeffatrackaid very much. Just get nameserver service from the company you bought your domain from. This generally does not cost anything and would be much more reliable than managing it on your own. This is the setup I use as well.
