comment How does network sniffing software work over a switch?
I will try to learn models of switches and report back. Could the culprit be a cheap switch located at the top of the network topology? I guess it becomes even more complicated in that case. What would the policy of a switch be if a packet which does not belong to any of its ports arrives from the cheap switch located above itself on the topology?

My experience suggests a situation more like the case in David's answer. Sniffing computer appears to be receiving not some but all packets but all other computers are transmitting.

See your kernel version with uname -r. Files with a different number could be deleted if you will not use those kernels ever again. You can consider taking a backup before you delete of course.

I guess $DATE is set before this piece of code? If so please let us know how you set that variable too. You can also try to echo contents of DATE and FILEMTIME before line 87 as well to get more debug information.

More importantly you should check the mysql error log. In a standard installation it should be located in /var/log/ directory. If it is not there check the configuration file for user specified location.

comment ssh tunneling to remote site or SOCKS proxy
If you want to create this tunnel from in a non-interactive way, you can use the ssh-copy-id someuser@public_server_ip_or_domain command to copy your users public key to somuser's authorized_keys file on public server. This way password will not be asked on your following logins.

Are you referring to an Apache "virtual host" used for web hosting?

comment Simple DNS for 1 domain configuration
I agree with jeffatrackaid very much. Just get nameserver service from the company you bought your domain from. This generally does not cost anything and would be much more reliable than managing it on your own. This is the setup I use as well.

You can inspect this issue by tracing package dependencies for instance in this case this page lists dependencies of linux-image-server package.

I did not change the default setup of xen-tools on Debian. Besides I guess I would need to change partition configuration. But host system was already working when I got it.

if you have access to the incoming mail headers, you can use a combination of grep, cut commands to extract the sender address.

Are you using compression options of Apache? This page httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_deflate.html indicates a configuration inorder not to compress image files.[page]:
