ZFS may spread copies(ditto blocks) on different vdevs, but it's unclear if it'll spread copies to vdevs first before writing to the same vdevs. superuser.com/questions/194644/freenas-single-disk-zfs As for recovery, I'm still trying to figure out if it's possible to recovery from a spanning non-redundant zpool with some subvolumes with copies=2 turned on. It seems to be possible, but I still need to do some of my own testing to make sure. serverfault.com/questions/377892/…
