comment Shell script: the child process do not terminate in linux
The child processes will always appear in ps as zombies because their parent (your script) is spending all its time polling and cannot handle their exit.

comment Include current rewritten URI in substitution
I only mentioned it because I want an answer to the question, not for someone to suggest the work-around that I already know.

comment Windows AD Domain naming recommendations
A small point - one can use something much smaller, faster and secure than IIS to serve the redirect. Even haproxy or nginx are probably overkill - let alone a full-featured server like apache2.

comment How does a domain beginning with www.uk get resolved?
Doesn't matter what the beginning is - resolution starts from the end (.mobi)

@Earlz archlinux.mirrors.uk2.net/iso/2012.09.07/arch looks like only 3M larger to me

@tylerl Indeed, but you can only do that if you actually compare them to the advantages.

@nightcracker No, we have twice as much food, but don't worry as there's enough space on the plate to store enough food to feed the entire population of the planet many times over.

@nightcracker a 2x increase in used memory is not significant compared to a x^2 increase in addressable memory.

64-bit OS ISOs are bigger because they also contain the entirety of a 32-bit system in order to support both kinds of executable. The massive size difference is not because 64-bit binaries are bigger (they are, but not significantly).

@Quandary: Yes, I know. The question was whether there's a solution that doesn't use symbolic links (junction points perhaps?) that would work on XP.

Also, you can keep the same IP address when your network card (or whole computer) needs replacing. Imagine how annoying it would be without the IP abstraction.
