Agreed, but in all my IT career ping is the tool to confirm there is basic connectivity between two devices, so if it is not working surely nothing else can work. You could argue and say it's not internal as the problem only occurs for remote users.

Cheers Simon, sorry for the bad clarification. It cannot resolve names with DNS, and it cannot find the hosts with bare IP's. Whats makes it more odd, if you do a reverse lookup of the FQDN it can resolve to the correct address. I have configured a GlobalNames zone to support single-label name resolution.

comment Win 8 - how to prepare an image so it does not run through setup?
are you adding the /OOBE command when SysPreping? Not familiar with SysPrep for Win8 but can't imagine that it's changed much since Win7.

Can you confirm the PDC Emulator FSMO role is on a current working DC?

you could invest in something like Shadow Protect shadowprotect.com that has a dedicated SBS version that can image and entire server to .spf format which is hardware independent. You could get two external hard disks one for week 1 and week 3 and one for week 2 and week 4, rotate the disks by taking one offsite. I do this every week, and have actually restored from a SP backup in a real situation.

I am not saying there is an 'official' issue with VHDX, but I have experienced issue's myself and have since came up with this work around.

The NT Servers have spaces in the hostnames for examepl 000 admin server don't ask why, it was long before my time. There for simply moving the data will break hyperlinks in the documents.

Adrian, the fact of which operating systems makes no difference. Its really just for some other techs opinion.
