comment How can I assess the impact of WSUS updates before releasing them?
one thing you could do to automate the testing at least a little bit is script the installation process. Use something like WUInstall + Powershell / batch to automate each patch. You could log the installation / reboot time of each patch and basically install one at a time until all patches are installed. Then go back and look at the log to see if there were any patches that took a really long time.

comment How risky is storing credentials on disk in a Powershell SecureString?
If you run the script as an account that has the privileges, there should be no need for specifying credentials. As for joining a domain, again I would suggest point 2. Or use an account that only has privilege to create computer accounts

BTW, if what i'm stating is what you're looking for, point 2 in my answer is an example of a safe way to handle this.

can you provide a more clear example of what its you're trying to do? So if you're running a script as yourself, you're saying that whatever cmdlet your using prompts for credentials and doesn't simply "runas"?

comment Merge Live VMware hosts into existing vcenter
EVC is only needed for powered on vMotion. HA is NOT dependent on like CPU architectures. The VM would automatically power on just fine if you switched from on CPU to another.

comment Login timeout for domain-connected laptops
Do you potentially have UE-V loaded on your laptops, or some sort of persona / profile management tool? I've seen this issue with UE-V specifically because the profile is stored in the users home folder and if the users home folder isn't made available offline, it takes a while to time out.
