comment How to distribute root files with expect?
Yeah, that's a lot more time investment than I have time for at the moment, though. I was hoping there was some simple feature of expect (or Tcl) that would be a better way to do this than what I'm doing. This works, though.

comment In LDAP, what exactly IS a bind DN?
That seems like an unnecessarily confusing design, but your explanation does make sense.

comment crontab ifconfig outputting nothing
I'm just going to say that, in the intervening five years, one thing I constantly have to remind myself of about crons is that they don't run with the same environment (path, aliases, etc.) that I'm used to on the shell, and this continually trips me up.

Does the bindDN always correspond to a node in the directory? Or can it be an arbitrary string?

comment How to install MySQL 5.1 libraries on Ubuntu 14.04 or CentOS?
Michael, you're right, I misread the list. Thanks. In that case it's really just Ubuntu Server 14.04 that I need to be able to get MySQL 5.1 on.

Brilliant! Thanks. That FAQ is highly useful, too.

comment Can 'ps' show me only all processes I own, plus all their ancestors, in tree format?
Close enough; this inspired me to write my own (faster ;-)) version in PHP.

comment How does Ethernet know how long a frame is?
I guess I'm unclear on what "Original Ethernet packets define their length with the framing that surrounds it" means. The preamble/begin-frame bits are pretty clear, but how does the client know the end of the frame has been reached? How does it distinguish between the CRC and the interframe gap? Is the IFG random electrical noise, easily distinguishable from real signal?

comment crontab ifconfig outputting nothing
...but yes, it was a path problem. ifconfig is under /sbin, which is not in the default bash path. Thanks.

Sorry, it's ifconfig in the script, I typo'd it in the question.

Yes, and yes. The script executes normally when run by hand, and it is executable.

comment How do I tell what RewriteRule is testing against?
I wasn't asking what kind of strings ".*" will match, I'm quite familiar with regular expressions ;-) I'm asking: what string is that pattern being tested against? %{REQUEST_URI}? %{SOMETHING_ELSE}? Etc. For any regular expression, you've got pattern and an input. I know the pattern; what's the input to RewriteRule? Or more precisely, how do I find out what the current input to RewriteRule is?
