For me, fun is taking a program, language, whatever and making it do things it's designer never envisioned it doing. It comes in handy when I'm asked to do something a little outside the norm as part of my job.

As noted in my edit, I'm not interested in a way to reduce how lossy munin is but rather a tool/deamon that replaces the data logger with something that uses a non-lossy DB while leaving the munin-node side (the data sources) untouched. (If I had to, I expect I could write the data logger bit in ~1kloc by using SQLite or MySQL. But that doesn't give me a dashboard.)

I may have mucked up the terminology; the piece I'm looking for a replacement for is the stuff that uses RRD. From the little I've searched, it seems that the munin (as distinct from munin-node) is fairly well attached to RRD, so I expect what I'm looking for would replace it more or less completely.

By the look of it, that was also causing other problems with my connection (I was having a hard time getting video to stream correctly and after turning that off, it seems fine).

You would think ping would cache that :b

Well, I won't count that as a viable solution :o)

So you are able to reproduce the described problem on your system? --- Crud. I was hoping that this was a symptom of some config issue (I've been getting less than stellar network performance lately).

I'm fairly sure that would do what I want, but even the first find is to slow: i.e. I have other problems. :(

@Eduardo: If it's looking at extra subdirs, it is most definitively NOT fast enough.

1) So for is not subject to command line length limits? 2) memory pressure is an issue.

As I understand it, that will expand to for dir in <some long list of dirs>; and unless bash handles it as a stream, it can be expected to fail. (See edit)

From experience: using an RJ-45 jack (8 contacts) to hook up an RJ-11 telephone plug (6 contacts) works, but it can bend the fist and last contacts on the jack far enough that it then won't work for Ethernet.
