For me, fun is taking a program, language, whatever and making it do things it's designer never envisioned it doing. It comes in handy when I'm asked to do something a little outside the norm as part of my job.

comment What's new in Puppet since 2007?
Some elaboration on that first point wouldn't go unappreciated.

Well that gives me a better idea where to start (2007 -> ver < 0.24.x) but I'd rather not read 3 years/+2K lines of change log. Given that book is a rather prominent stake in the sand, I'd expect a delta from there from the end user's perspective would be valuable.

OTOH, it's kind of hard to pin on a wall.

@Avleen: I'm looking for more of an "at a glance" kind of reference rather than a complete reference. I want something I can use to quickly find the name of the thing I'm looking for, so I can then go and do a more in depth search for.

@mattdm: I'm looking to build a minimal base install. Somethings that can boot strap it's self int a useful system but that won't have anything that isn't needed or needs to be changed; including even the most basic system daemons. Configuration of the system should be a purely additive process.

I hadn't thought of starting with an embedded Linux... Interesting.

The installer program, in and of its self is likely larger than what I'd really like to get.

@DerfK: don't they also have bits and parts that are supposed to get executed? What does it take to execute them? (I'm willing to live with rather severe restrictions on what can be done but it had better not be silent if you violate them.)

comment installing mysql via apt-get with non-default data and logs directories
Ah! I didn't know about the conf.d bit. But that still doesn't solve the problem of finding the rest of the places that the path should go (/etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysql for a start)

Is there are least a way to make said edits before the server gets started? "Install all the files, but let me do the initialization later."
