Been in IT for 16 years, doing a little of everything over the years. Primarily a web and database developer, with a tiny bit of design experience.

Branching into system administration (officially a Sun Certified Systems Administrator for Solaris 10) and also maintain web servers for current employer (hardware/software, SSL, etc.).

+1 for dtrace, it's amazing. You need to be careful though, since asking for too much data could hog resources and cause problems. Any dtrace work should be done on a non-production system first so you don't inadvertently bring down your production server. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything....

If the hosts file doesn't appear to be working, check your proxy settings. They could be ignoring your hosts file.

comment Browsing to a site on port 8080 Windows Server 2008 IIS 7
Ask your network admin (or whoever runs the firewall) to see if the port is open. Alternatively you can (from your dev machine) do a "telnet server 8080", which will attempt to have a telnet session connect to the server on port 8080. If you can't get through that way, then chances are something is blocking it, most likely the firewall. You can also use wireshark or similar traffic sniffer to see where the packets are getting whacked.

Yeah, with visonapp's Remote Desktop product. We've purchased Remote Desktop, which is very impressive, but it is no longer free. Worth every penny, though (easy for me to say because my company paid for it!).

I've seen these called wildcard certs in the past (allows for *.domain.com all hosted on the same box).

comment Modifying default website breaks ColdFusion multi instance administrator on IIS7
I've never seen an issue. What it does is put all the CFIDE stuff under the JRun4 servers folder, outside of IIS. Then you use the Web Server Connector to attach a CF instance to all IIS sites, or, in my case, to a particular web site. I find it's cleaner to do it that way, so I can always get on a server and go to port 8300 to do instance management and other CF work.

I've seen where auto-negotiate, even when it looks like it's doing what you think it's doing, it killing your throughput. So unless you have a need to auto-negotiate, my advice is to set it all the same and see if that makes things better.

+1 for putting in your script. I've had mixed results with environment variables, so I like to make sure that everything I need is already defined. Also a good practice if you have jobs that should eventually run on startup. Your account may have the vars, but at startup they may not exist (or root may not have them). So I'm always in the habit of defining everything I need. It also helps to avoid any binary collisions (if you have multiple Perl packages installed, etc.).
