comment Compact/Shrink an Expandable/Dynamic VHD to fully recover space
Do you have any references to documentation that supports your claim that Hyper-V Server 2012 automatically recovers space in VHDX? I actually see complaints to the contrary when I search MS forums (e.g., Expandable VHDX Disk Remains Expanded...).

comment Cancel background backup operation on Windows Server 2008
I would note: 1) this requires elevated privileges (i.e., Run as Administrator...) 2) It can still take a long time to abort (20+ mins). Searching the internet one may find those who are impatient and end up manually stopping the Block Level Backup Engine service or kill its associated process. I wouldn't recommend the latter; better to be patient and let wbadmin stop job do its job.

comment Disk Writes to Mounted EBS Volume Not Logged in Monitor
Is there something I don't get about symlinks being bad? Are you arguing against them, or do you think I have something else wrong with my set up? Finally: have you ever used a symlink across EBS volumes and had the EC2 Console report disk writes correctly?

It's not that they can't write to /mnt, it's whether it's good practice. Maybe I overthink this, being primarily a developer and not a system admin, but to me it seems the remote user gains nothing by knowing the directory they back up to is on a mounted volume. In fact it only strengthens the coupling. Moreover, what if in the future I migrate the volume somewhere that has already reserved that specific mount point? Sure it's a low probability, but it's still a consideration. I also feel more comfortable knowing non-administrative users are restricted to their own home directories.

Yeah, my only reasoning in setting up was that I like to keep mounted volumes in the /mnt. But that's just convention/habit - I could change it. I'm going to investigate a little further, since as far as I can tell the writes are going to the mounted volume, despite the EC2 reports.

I thought hard links only work within a single volume?

Thanks, that worked. And for the record, I was correct that the SBSMonitoring instance is the larger.

comment Root Relative Symbolic Links Not Resolving Properly (Windows)
@Ian - Thanks for the comment. Were you able to create a root relative symlink in Windows? What tool did you use? Since the standard ones didn't work for me, I had written my own PS cmdlet, which I can post, if you think that'd help. I'm beginning to wonder whether others even use root relative links in windows.
