comment postgres 9 replication - replicating only one database
Slony is the appropriate solution, so have an upvote. Having worked with it, however, I'd suggest that the OP do literally ANYTHING within their power to use Postgres 9's replication instead. Slony is an administrative tar-pit with extremely eccentric behavior, bizarre restrictions that mess you up at wierd times (no DDL without piping it through a special script, strange locking behavior, on and on), and a generally hellish threshold of reliability that is anything but enterprise-ready. I've admin'd Slony for relatively simple use cases for six months now, and I want that half a year back.

comment Why are all Linux commands broken after installing Perl?
@gparent: professionals don't do stuff like this? Guess none of the junior sysads where I used to work got that memo ;) "What do you mean stupid? I just pasted 1200 lines of bash into my terminal from this forum post. I don't think it messed anything up..."

I don't think this deserves the downvotes. Someone did something stupid, but they didn't ask a stupid question. Think back to your beginner days--who hasn't done something on par with this and then needed help? The questioner was rude when attacked, but his/her initial question, I think, was sound.

comment VMware ESXi Missing VMDK (Flat files and snapshots, but no base image)
@joeqwerty, That's what we ended up doing. We shelled out $300 for VMWare to tell us "Yeah, you're up the creek. Rebuild the VM from scratch!" Apparently, since the vmdks were ones we had upgraded from a previous version of ESXi, they had an organization scheme that was not recoverable by any tools available to the VMWare techs. Ah well, you live, you learn.

comment Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation Group policy being overridden by local policy
Sorry, should have read your question more thoroughly. If you want a detailed log of what's applying what on the workstation, try environment logging: support.microsoft.com/kb/221833/en-us. Also, I still would make sure that it's not a GPO scope issue. The easiest way to eliminate scope as a possible cause is: try moving the desktop background settings GPO up to the same level as your default domain GPO, and just set a security filter that only applies it to the users/computers that you want to be affected. If the problem vanishes, it was a scope issue. If it doesn't, I'm stumped.
