yeah, I've tried Virtual Box before on a Mac machine and it was quite easy to use... but, I'm really interested in playing around with xen mostly and running my machine more like a practice server. thanks for the VMs in windows clarification... but what about the servers which run xen so that their clients can run instances as thin clients? would dom0 in that case be cli only? who uses which graphics card?

Great, thanks! you provided some very good arguments and gave me some more things to think about. My gut was telling me its maybe not a great setup and that's why I double checked here. I will definitely rethink my email strategy.

I agree Evan, non-deterministic is baaad. Good argument for not having multiple DHCP servers in the same broadcast domain, thanks.

You were right, Ryan. It was a little complicated for for my small network. When I wrote the question, I was planning without having been to the site yet. I ended up having one router as the top level gateway which fed to DES-1024R unmanaged switches which connected everything else. And it turned out that employees are closely nearby the students while they are in (we're a learning center), so don't even have to restrict the internet much. I'll just selectively mount network drives to separate the network shares or put them in different workgroups.

Thanks kce, double thanks for checking out my other question (where I ended up putting everything all on the same network with one router at the gateway and un-managed switches to everything else. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to subnets, so I kept it simple). "subnet your addressing space and give one subnet to the wireless clients and another to your wired clients" -> will my wireless and wired clients have access to the same network resources if they are on different subnets?

I guess you answered the part about the wireless and ethernet being serviced by different DHCP servers. Both wireless and ethernet are all on the same broadcast domain, so I guess they can't have their own DCHP server. but there is a bit I'm still unclear about... you said "you don't want to be running two DHCP servers in that single broadcast domain" .. is there a reason for this? I'd imagine its because they can conflict with each other~ OK, But if I had to run two DHCP servers, should they have different ranges?
