I am currently a Computer Science graduate student (Ph. D. seeking) at the University of Maryland. I do a lot of programming (primarily web application development) for small businesses and nonprofits.

In school, I focus mostly on security, and I have also worked on counter-terrorism applications.

You can find me most days in PHP and/or C#, but increasingly in JavaScript with a focus on Rich Internet Application areas (knockout.js, durandal, breeze.js, etc).

comment Port forwarding to the router itself on Edgerouter
@joeqwerty VPN is an option, though I'm sure that there has to be way to do this and I would like to find it just for the sake of knowing. I'm not concerned about a port scanner though - I have several other locations using other firewall software (pfSense, ISP-provided, and others) and have cut down from thousands of attacks per location per day to almost zero, simply by changing the port.

comment PHP-FPM TCP connections not terminating in time
I don't know for sure whether it will clear the problem up or not. (That's why this is a comment, not an answer.) It certainly can't hurt to try though.

comment PHP-FPM TCP connections not terminating in time
TCP Sockets are only more scalable if you actually use multiple worker machines and farm the connections out to them. If you are only using a single machine, then the extra overhead of encapsulating the data in TCP packets in FPM and deencapsulating it again in Nginx means that domain sockets are more efficient.

Have you tried using Unix Domain Sockets instead of TCP to communicate from Nginx to PHP-FPM? I don't know why you are having this problem with TCP connections, but switching to not use TCP may be the easiest fix.

comment How to “un-ANSI-fy” logs?
@Guss what version of Bower are you using? It has supported that flag since 2012.

comment How to “un-ANSI-fy” logs?
If you know that you will be writing the output to a file, the easiest thing to do (at least for NPM) is to run with the --no-color flag. Many other commands also have similar flags.

comment Ubiquiti Wireless Guest Network VLAN w/ pfSense + Cisco Switch
I had exactly the same problem, only with a Netgear "Smart" Switch instead of a Cisco Switch. The problem is almost certainly the VLAN / Trunk settings on the switch itself.

comment Java Spring application working on one system, dying on almost identical one
What does the code look like at someClass.java:234 where the Null exception is thrown? Is it trying to get outside data?

comment Can I use something like a tunnel for SSH in this Linux/Windows Remote Desktop scenario?
Why not install an SSH server on the Windows machine and tunnel with that? There are lots of SSH Servers for Windows available.

comment how many decibels of noise will an Intel R1000BB generate?
(Oops, I accidentally pressed '4' when I meant '5'.) This machine is a Poweredge 2900 (Gen III). Right now, it's in a datacenter, but I had it at home for a long time while I was setting it up and it was quieter than the HVAC.

@josten I have a 4U that's pretty quiet - it uses regular-sized 80mm fans, so they don't have to spin as fast as the tiny ones used in a 1U.

comment An unknown tool is wiping our Virtual Machines and we can't ID it
Purely based on the design of the window, the strings contained in it, as a handful of similar screenshots, it looks like the tool is something built by Acronis. Here is an example of a tool Acronis built for Seagate (click "Next" a few times to see it) that looks very similar.

comment rails app (via apache proxy) images from uploads directory missing
That sounds like a good solution if you can't edit the Apache config, but doing it in the Apache config puts the static assets load back on the web server instead of tying up the application server with it.

comment DNS A record pointing to private IP address
If you literally can't connect to the VM at all by name, that means the DNS is not configured correctly (or hasn't had time to propagate). Run nslookup DNS_NAME to see if that is the case. If you connect to the VM and get a "default" webserver page (something like one of these), then your VM's web server is just not configured to respond to that name and you need to configure it.

comment Getting an intermediate SSL certificate
DigiCert Enterprise lets you pre-validate your domain and then do large-scale subdomain certificate generation. (Disclosure: I do not work for DigiCert, but my employer uses their certificate services.)

@Nobleleader13245 the only way I know of to get a 405 is if the verbs are set wrong.

comment Server unable to browse shares on itself
Try turning off IPv6 on the server. We had a very similar issue because IPv6 was not set up on our network but was still enabled on the individual servers.

comment IIS and PHP with FastCGI/WinCache not seeing updated files
Why not just have the update script explicitly reload the site? I think that recycling the application pool may be all that you need to do to clear the cache, and you can definitely script that with powershell.

We can't help you effectively unless you show us the rewrite rules that you tried to use. It may or may not also help to show us the PHP router code.
