5 years commercial C#.Net Asp.Net experience following mid-life career change. Best career decision I ever made!

Unexpectedly found myself as IT Manager for a Small Business in the insurance sector. On a steep learning curve with Servers and Networks now. It's never dull!

Sorry, I marked this as the answer by mistake.

I so meant to come back and make a further comment on this, but did not get around to this until now. Better late than never, eh? I am going to mark this as the correct answer as it turned out to be a failing PSU. This server had only a single PSU and following replacement, the problem has not re-occurred.

comment SQL Server database refuses to back up to USB disk
Thanks @Cougar9000. This was a while back now and I got around the issue by sending the back up to an internal drive and then using a sql cmd to copy the files to my USB drive and clean up old ones from the internal drive. It has been working well for a number of months now. I do not remember whether I tried your first point, however, I fully agree and practice your second point about only one DB per job. Wise words.

comment Can I split open/divide a large MS SQL disk media set?
+1 For telling me what I didn't want to hear! Sadly, as a business, we have to be in a position to roll back to a point in time in our data. Our internal application does not audit changes to the database (it would have if I had written it!). I will need to store this large file for a number of years. I do accept this is likely the one and only answer, but I'll leave this open for a short while.

It does seem damning, but the disk is fine. I can back up to that folder, just not this particular database. I will consider ProcMon capture +1. Thanks.

Thanks for the pointers. The room is at a constant 19 deg C. Fans are all running normally. Cables have been checked. I will consider the PSU and investigate.

comment SBS 2003 Routing and Remote Access switches back to DHCP on server restart. Why?
I'd given up on this question (thanks @steve +1 just for being the first comment!). No the DHCP range was above 150. There were no addresses (static or otherwise) assigned in the range 101 - 120 either. We are replacing our SBS2003 to SBS2011 so I hope this will be immaterial soon. Also, we bought a Fortigate firewall and this has taken over the remote access role; we have SSL VPN set up on this now. I'll leave this Q open though, in case anyone comes up with an answer.

comment With Exchange 2003, should SMTP be accessible externally over port 25?
+1 because this identifies my exact same problem and coupled with the answer confirmed exactly what I had in mind. Thanks for asking it.

Firstly, thanks. I take your point about Tape as a reliable (and cheap) medium. I think I will look at a backup -> Disc -> Tape arrangement. Thank you also for affirming my suggested SQL backup plan.
