comment Chef: connection refused for cookbook upload
Thanks, this is clearly better than reinstalling. I tried to figure it out but I think the step I was missing was the reconfigure command.

comment How to set up my Linode server to run multiple programs on different subdomains?
+1 I use nginx. It's pretty trivial to set up for node.

comment mongodb eating 48G in 1min
Mongo should be on a dedicated box/VM. I tried running it with apache/mysql with horrible results whenever I had a spike on apache, because mongod had claimed too much RAM and apache was tuned to use more than was available (which was almost nothing) without a lot of page faults. My advice: keep mongodb away from other programs, you'll thank me later.

Sharding is also called "partitioning" in rdbms terminology. Where you split a table up over multiple servers.

comment Upgrading a mongo cluster
I have done it the way you mention, and it has worked. (one at a time upgrades: shutdown node, replace binary, start node). I would like to hear it from a 10gen employee, though, that it should always work like that.

comment Website has become slower on a VPS, was much fast on a shared host. What's wrong?
So prefork worked? Congrats, looks much faster.
