comment Active Directory: How to answer “does this user belong to this group (directly or indirectly)”
I haven't been able to test this (haven't been around an AD last week), but google suggests that it would do the right thing. I haven't forgotten about this, will come back to accept it soon.

+1 That looks like what I want... Will test it later today...

@Redmumba I would be using it interactively, so I'm not concerned about language. If it's only available as an API, I could write a program/script to access it, but if it's a gui or command-line tool, that's okay too.

@JoelCoel I'm happy to use any mechanism available; I need it to do point lookups when specific issues arise, so whatever tool or language does it best is fine with me.

comment Sendmail name resolution problem
It might still be something like the firewall; if the machine originally had the firewall adjusted with something like iptables -A, but not subsequently saved, the post-reboot configuration may not match the pre-reboot config. When was the last reboot before the power failure?

comment What does this ssh error mean?
It could still be a problem on the home machine, but it probably isn't related to any error in the keyfile...

@kevin: ssh-keygen -y -f kev_rsa should either print out the public key ("ssh-rsa AAAAB3N....") or fail with load error, depending on whether the key is valid. If the key is valid, then the problem is on the server end.

@womble: Dru and Kevin explained the situation in the comments above. I'm assuming client machine 1 is at work, and is not accessible from home where client machine 2 is.

Also, if you're basing your assumption that it doesn't like the key based on the key_read errors logged above, be aware that they are logged even for successful logins.

What are the operating systems on the two client machines? Could the transfer of the private key have munged the line-endings or introduced text (possibly blank lines or spaces) before the opening line?

The tumblr-specific answer is at tumblr.com/docs/en/custom_domains, however the answer below answers the question for masked url-proxying for general servers.

Note that the IP for tumblr.com and for developerugly.tumblr.com are different, which did you use?

comment How can I ship Windows Server 2008 event logs to a syslog server?
@Kara: that question is about syslog servers, this one is about clients to send data to the syslog server. Related, but not the same.
