comment Why does DNS work the way it does?
The DNS namespace was flat, with no delegations, for a long time; and it was implemented as a single list, held in one place. That became unworkable and got replaced by DNS in 1982...

comment restrict mercurial repo access
How is user z trying to access this? What error message is user z getting? Without more detail, this could be anything from "hgadmin has not re-read its config" to "user z hasn't plugged in their network cable"

comment tomcat cannot write files into WEB-INF folder
I see that you've added details, but they just confirm what I've already said. You've said that the tomcat user is only in group nobody, but the files are owned by domain:domain. You need to either add the tomcat user into the domain group; or chgrp the files and folders to the tomcat user's group.

Nice, I had somehow never run across fcron.

comment A certain Server how many pages/users can hold?
There are many many factors that need to be taken into account here, and it's impossible to run through them all. If you can't test your app, you'll want to try to at least profile it once it's live so that you can project what load it can handle, and identify the bottlenecks.

Of course there are other factors that are going to affect the real answer - for instance, if the code has to get a database lock before it can render the page, you're going to have more contention issues as the number of pages rendered per second increases, and you won't get linear scaling. At some point you'll start running out of RAM or network bandwidth... But this is a good start, and about as good as you're going to get without being able to test and profile the application

As Nils pointed out, we need to know the owner and group of the directories in question, as well as what user tomcat is running as and what groups the tomcat user is in.

comment Apache default virtualhost only works if the domain resolves to the IP and not if it uses nameservers?
It's normal for changes to glue records to take a while to spread, but if it takes more than 24 hours I'd contact your registrar's support to let them know

"NewDomain.com also uses ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com. Pinging it comes up with nothing. If I set the IP of ns1.mydomain.com to NewDomain.com in the hosts file, it works." This confirms that you have a DNS problem. It sounds like your registrar hasn't pointed newdomain.com at ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com yet.

"MyDomain.com returns the IP of my server, which is the IP of ns1.mydomain.com" - So ns1.mydomain.com is also your web server?

anacron can only run tasks at intervals of days (once every day, once ever two days, once every 7 days, etc). Anacron is even less suited for this task than traditional cron.
