comment apache is not responding from the outside (firewall/iptables problem)
Note: with -A INPUT the new rule comes after all other rules in the input chain. That means that the new rule may come after a general REJECT rule, making it useless. To add the new rule at the top, use -I INPUT instead

comment How to determine optimal size for LVM snapshot?
Are you using several snapshots at the same time? Else, can't you just use all free space in the group?

The task of killing ongoing git activity and preventing new ones to start are independent in both our solutions. Eventually we have to kill ongoing git activity to be sure to have a clean backup. I wait up to 20 min for any git activity to complete. Anyway, thank you for your input.

+1. Thanks you, those are useful comments. The reason I don't redirect stderr is that errors are in this case really errors and I have no real reason for hiding them.

Why is this better? I'm not sure I'd like to touch the sshd configuration for the machine in a cron job. setting the shell also seems a bit too much, but at least I use the tool for the job (chsh) there. Thinking about it, I guess I could tamper with the git-users .ssh/ to prevent login instead of the passwd file.

+1 for good point. git clone mirror is a compliment and will also be done. Here I'm considering lvm snapshots as that's already a part of the infrastructure. mirrors are good for restoring git usage-errors. A full backup (including hooks, configurations, and what not) is good for restoring a server.
