comment Showing total progress in rsync: is it possible?
Since rsync 3.1.0 there is now a basic total file transfer progress included. See answer serverfault.com/a/441724/107793 for details.

comment How do I make rsync also check ctime?
I don't think there is a way to make rsync check ctime. As you already indicated, the only way is to compare the checksums of the files.

comment Swap files in Cloud Infrastructures
You're right, I was referring to swap space inside the VM. I updated the question to reflect that. We have several storage options available (cheap FC SAN, expensive enterprise NAS). More important than which storage to use is for us, what benefit the user has if we offer him swap space. Also if we don't offer swap space, will the user just use some available storage to create swap while the performance of the swap then might not be optimal?

comment Using RVM in Puppet manifests
I don't understand your answer. I guess the magic happens in puppet:///modules/rails/rvm-install-system-wide but I don't have that file. Which rails module do you use? How does this help running bundler or ruby applications within a RVM gemset?

comment How to specify multiple root certificates for nginx client certificate verification?
There is currently an ongoing discussion on the Nginx mailinglist on this topic. It seems Nginx only supports one file and you have to concatenate all CA certificates into that file. An open question is, which approach gives faster response times and if Nginx should support CA lookup via hash based filenames.
