comment What are some reasons why a MySQL index would be 12X the size of the table?
You may get a more informative answer if you can share with us the data types of the primary and secondary key.

comment UPS with a HP Proliant server
They SHOULDN'T care. BTW THD on a square wave is pretty meaningless if the meter is expecting a sine wave, it could be a very clean square wave but the meter is trying to compare it to the sine and marking all deviance as distortion. If you truly have Harmonics, interharmonics, notching, RF noise, frequency variations, etc. in the 40% range, that would be an instant RMA on the UPS, it is defective.

comment How to mount an ISO file in Linux?
The iso9660 option seems to detect most variations of optical disk images including DVD, not just CD or CD-*.

comment Why pay for UNIX?
No matter what your brand of O/S, if you don't have a patch management policy in place and enforced, and upgrade when obsolete, you have zero network security. BTW Nice link to a ca 1998/2000 article.

comment Database hardware advice
The two server arrangement gives you a fallback plan, for example during a long upgrade of the database server to new O/S and RDBMS, you can run the old RDBMS on the web server- and lower performance, of course.

comment MySQL slow/down under heavy load
If it is also running Apache/PHP, how can it be a dedicated box? Do your hard disks pass SMART and Fsck cleanly? Have you run memtest86+ on the system overnight?

comment How to strip a Linux server distro to the core?
A benefit of fully uninstalling unused packages is shorter package dependency changes, which means fewer, faster and shorter update downloads and less chance a fairly useless package will have an update issue. Also your /var partition will fill up slower/need less attention.

I don't think this question deserves to go negative, except that it started on the wrong forum.

comment Why is my server's performance so abysmal
You have only a slice of that machine, and I would not describe it as very modern or beefy (seems to be a two processor NetBurst architecture).
