comment Certification authority root certificate expiry and renewal
This has been an extremely helpful addition. The actually valid answer doesn't result in a sufficiently compatible certificate for me if you have arbitrary settings on your original root ca.

comment hosting co. wildcard SSL cert: config & file location unknown
I would recommend looking around on the server a bit to figure out whether talking to the public IP really ends up talking to your server or a frontend proxy (load balancer or so) that actually picks up the certificate. My guess is they don't want you to have access to the private key - it's private, after all, right?

comment Strict security and virtual host isolation with Nginx?
Nevertheless with FPM the nginx processes don't even run that code or am I missing something? The interesting bit is that nginx never should run application code in its process space.

There is no need to do that. Please read up on the OSI model (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osi_model) specifically how layers 2 and 3 interact.

comment Newbie questions on MAC and high availability failovers
The "MAC from software" is related to virtual machines. A NIC "owns" its MAC address. If you have a virtual machine, then there's a virtual NIC owning a MAC which (by definition) is defined by software.

Sorry, it's really hard to follow what you're talking about when you sprinkle IP addresses in the middle of your sentence. I don't understand you. :(

I don't understand how this is even related to the question. Digital Ninja: can you try to edit the question to show how this answer relates to it?!?
