comment Ubuntu, how to setup a new machine like an existing one
This. Just clone the machine and change the name, it's by far the fastest way of doing it.

If you're not a Linux admin, it's almost certainly not the best solution for you - you'd have to climb the learning curve all over again.

comment Small and medium business: user and workstation management with Debian Linux
Why not use NIS? Installing and maintaining it is pretty simple, compared to LDAP and/or krb5.

I'm still using my HP laserjet 4; I had to replace a little plastic paper sensor that broke and that's it.

Spurious traffic seemed to be limited to some MACs.

I've ticked your answer because breaking up the stack and factory resetting the switched seems to have made the situation a lot better.

The topology is almost flat: the only strange things are a hub under a desk with some workstations on, and an OpenVPN host that bridges its clients onto the LAN. There is a Cisco WAN router as well that emits occasional 802.1d (STP) packets, but STP is turned off on the switch stack. There are no VLANs and no bonded NICs.

Sounds plausible - turn off all the firewalls until you get the routing working.

comment Why is it that highend servers fail more often than heavily used workstations?
Seconded on the environmental conditions. If a server room goes over temperature even once for an hour or so it can toast all the hardware in it, permanently reducing its reliability.
