The script needs to do some startup checks that should only be done once, at boot time, but not once the system is running.

Had exactly the same problem. In my case "Company A" was 1and1.

@voretaq7: I don't really worry about losing a few seconds worth of data (this was stated in my question). I worry about filesystem corruption and booting up in a clean state (if possible, avoiding fsck).
