Yes, there are other NRPE checks on the machine which are returning proper results. I'm not so sure how to read the output of strace, but if you know how to, then you can find the output here: pastebin.com/ApQ1nW6N

Okay, it seems like locally the check script works properly but from the Nagios server it doesn't... but that's not related, you solved my issue so please create an answer and it could be nice if you'd explain why the vers=3 fixed it, thanks.
