comment where does uname get version number in FreeBSD RELEASE?
What about a massive search for "9.1-RELEASE" to maybe found out where this come from? (ie find / -type f -exec grep -l "9.1-RELEASE" {} \;)

That is still not enough! WITH_OpeNSSL_PORTS=yes is needed in /etc/make.conf.

If you are planning to build a vulnerable FreeBSD test system, you should go for a base FreeBSD 10.0: OpenSSL 1.0.1e with the base system. Or have a look here: superuser: about reinstalling openssl on FreeBSD.

comment Are ZFS pools or LVM volume groups more reliable for utilizing many partitions?
Regarding FreeNAS: this might be a nice solution, but as many NAS-like solutions, there are quite a few things hidden (ie a small swap partition at the beginning of each disks, ...). You might learn a thing or two playing with the beast, but if you know what you are doing, then you should do it all by yourself.

comment CPU 100% idle but still showing load average
While totally agree with your analysis, I am not sure it has to do with the running process shown on top. If you look carefully: it is the top command itself.

comment FreeBSD 10 - OpenSSL Update
@Michael Hampton: this will only display something if the openssl library is not the default/system one and was installed through ports/packages.

comment ZFS RAID and LUKS encryption in Linux
There are "plenty" of such setup for FreeBSD using geli ... even official ones (geli is FreeBSD LUKS counterpart).
