comment Detecting a network from ansible playbook using nslookup
You can use nslookup ... | grep -q "can't find"; or you can use the alternative proposed in the answer by DefionsCode.

If I understand your question correctly, you are looking for the same technique as the one described in serverfault.com/questions/644082/…. Yes, it is in in the docs, but it's quite hard to find and understand, so no flogging :-)

comment How to set scp_if_ssh = True for a group?
My understanding from the documentation is that you cannot; but did you try as explained in docs.ansible.com/intro_inventory.html#group-variables?

comment Avoid repeating 'with_items' in Ansible role
I deleted my answer, because, as you pointed out, it was not applicable. If this code runs on the host system rather than on the virtual machines themselves, I don't know how you can do it without with_items. However, a real example instead of "# action" would have made your question clearer and it might make others think of alternative ways to do what you are trying.

comment Can I update Ubuntu with active users logged in?
@anregen I believe that people are downvoting the question because it seems to indicate that you aren't experienced enough. Your question could marginally fail the test "Shows sufficient skill in the technology under question to be able to work on it for pay" (meta.serverfault.com/questions/4111/…). I myself flirted with the idea of flagging your question as off-topic, although in the end I chose to reply to it.

comment tail all log files in a directory | exclude zipped files
@JackalopeZero - I can't tell. Do the filenames have spaces or any other strange characters? Is it possible that ls and/or grep insert any color codes? (You can try to add --color=never both to ls and to grep.) These are wild guesses though - I can't tell you if I don't see it. Maybe if you copy and paste the exact messages we could get a clue.
