comment Can Nagios NRPE call a Python script on a Windows host, which requires a UNC network share connection?
I think this is it - I've re-written the Python script in Powershell and the script runs fine locally; when NRPE calls it we get file access errors. The NSClient runs as local system, so does not have permissions on the network, UNC share. I have even tried mounting the drives with a letter, and then referencing this in the script, but again still have issue of running fine locally; not running when called remotely. edit - will look at granting perms to the machine in question, we don't have a domain so not sure about MSA

Yeah according to the documentation the script should be running on the Windows box as local user. One issue is that everytime the script is called it tries to mount the network drive, and then disconnect it. I've tried changing the logic so the drive is mapped persistently on the server, and then the script just connects to the unc location. However this is not working either and still returning the above error?!

that could well do it; there are so many cmdlets it's hard to know where to start.

Yes, that part's fine. I've been trying with Get-NetFirewall etc. to no avail

MAC address can be spoofed though. Can you not just set a username / password on the site?

Not all users are local admin on the workstation - I believe this may be part of the issue. Will check out GP preferences.

This is an option I will take a look at.

No the S: isn't already used - and if it is the mapping is deleted. I'm looking into Win 8 handling it differently depending on user/admin privileges.

Although I haven't mentioned it does do this - we recently changed the location of the s: drive so to ensure everyone migrated over correctly we do a delete first.

comment Why did robocopy cause my Windows 2012 server to hang last night?
Thanks for this Lucretius. Interestingly robocopy has hung on this server again (fortunately it's not crashed the whole server) and this was copying from an internal hard disk to an external, encrypted hard disk! (I need to figure out a way to encrypt our external hard drives and get them working with wbadmin - it's not liking my truecrypt encrypted partitions though). So although the original error is almost certainly a driver issue on the nic_team (it's the latest driver too) I'm also having problems with robocopy without crossing the network. Shame cos when it works it's great.

Unmanaged switch so no access to logs I'm afraid. The Win2012 logs told me very little, nothing along the lines of what I'm suspecting anyhow.

I'm starting to think it may be related to the NIC. The server has dual NIC, with latest drivers, so I don't think it's a driver issue. However, we have teamed the NICs, using the inbuilt Windows NIC teaming feature. I've not uncovered much but have come across (anecdotal) warnings about using Windows NIC teaming and would like further information on this.

comment Configure a “hardened” user account that an attacker would have a hard time abusing
as a general principle then, is it wise to disable internet access for a server, even if the perimeter firewall won't allow any connections in to that server?
