comment SQL failover cluster on single ESXi host
Would it not be wise to setup a failover cluster spread over different physical hardware?

comment Setting up a VPN on Windows 2008 R2, should I use PPTP or SSTP?
We've actually gone for OpenVPN, works great and does exactly what we require.

what are you changing the port from/to? netstat -an from the command line tells you what ports you're already listening on

comment VMware Converter conversion of Windows TeamCity Server
DHCP reservation will require you keep the same MAC, which is fine. DNS will be ok as well, as you'll still have same server name/IP after the move. Once you've converted the VM, before you fire it up, you can change the settings, and allocate more RAM etc. The good thing about doing it this way is if anything goes wrong you still have the original VM to fall back on.

Exactly this type of work is well documented by Microsoft, just try searching for it.

comment Is using a NAS with hot swap disks an effective way of cycling backups?
Thanks for the answer. Yes I felt that hot-swapping a disk on a regular basis may not the most effective method of what I'm trying to achieve. In this case I'll look at sourcing some 2TB external hard-drives, and cycling these. I'll take a look at rdiff-backup too as always open to ideas/suggestions about how we can improve our backups as they're so crucial.

comment Cisco 877 VPN: PPTP encryption not working
Apologies for topping and old topic, but I've followed this thread, and the thread it followed on from, with interest. We're in exactly the same position - need to configure a Cisco 877 router as a VPN server. However, the instructions in the first thread are to setup a PPTP VPN, which I now believe are insecure. If this is the case what are you using instead?

I'd go back to basics and find out if the NICS/Switch really are 1GBPS...

comment Server 2008 R2 Task Scheduler permissionf for a vbs script
setting 'Run whether used logged on or not' and 'Run with highest privileges' should be all you require for the task to run. If the issue does lie with FSO Delete folder then why does it run manually but not as a scheduled task? If the command is the issue, and there's no workaround, would there be any benefit to re-writing the script in Powershell?

comment Why does our Windows 7 Desktop keep continually making SMB requests to our SBS2003 server?
The slowdown turned out to be that the AV was scanning network locations (despite me having turned this off in the past as it's caused problems before). The developer noticed particular slowdown when opening a folder full of *.exes, but now that we've disabled network scanning on the AV he isn't experiencing the same slow down. The SMB requests are just to keep the folder share alive I guess.

comment What is the best VPN technology to implement in a SOHO setting?
Hasn't there been security flaws recently in using PPTP for VPN? I've been looking at VPN recently and been discouraged from using PPTP (which we used to use).

I don't think so - I'll certainly check though.

comment Why does our Windows 7 Desktop keep continually making SMB requests to our SBS2003 server?
We've just changed the network cable, and network port, and so far it seems much better. Is it possible that a dodgy network cable could cause so much disruption? (Although it doesn't explain why the machine is trying to authenticate with someone else's credentials for no good reason)

I've just checked and yes they're all coming from the same MAC address

comment Repeated SMB QUERY_PATH_INFO Packets for Windows file share
We've got a Win 7 machine which is hitting our SBS2003 DC with loads and loads of requests for query_file_info repeatedly, for no good reason it seems. Wireshark on the server shows these packets again and again, stumped as to why they're happening though, did you ever figure it out?

comment Setting up a VPN on Windows 2008 R2, should I use PPTP or SSTP?
The licensing for SSL VPN on the Cisco would presumably incur more expense though? PPTP not an option, so if SSTP uses SSL presumably it's a secure solution.
