comment Setting up a VPN on Windows 2008 R2, should I use PPTP or SSTP?
The licensing for SSL VPN on the Cisco would presumably incur more expense though? PPTP not an option, so if SSTP uses SSL presumably it's a secure solution.

Yeah I knew PPTP isn't secure - we stopped using that as a VPN solution recently. We've been using a third party app in the interim, but would rather use IPSec or SSTP if that's secure enough.

comment Why has ESXi 5.0 not used the software RAID configuration on my test server?
Well, in Windows I was never presented with 2 hard drives, so assumed that it was using RAID1. @RobinGill that sounds like what has happened.

As an aside, I don't recall explicitly telling Windows to mirror the disks, it just took care of it on its own!

OK thanks for the swift response. If an approved hardware RAID controller is the way to go I guess the best thing would be: clone the VM; install the controller; reinstall ESXi and import the VM?

it's software. I understand that ESXi won't work with software RAID in the same way, so I'm either looking at a workaround using RAID within the VM OS, or getting a hardware controller, or just not using software RAID in this instance.

comment Do you run antivirus on your Windows servers?
We had big problems here with a client type AV on an Exchange server. The company now provides a separate AV specially designed for Windows Server.

I'm pretty sure it's not the app. I'm trying the SFTP from within the network, and it's fine. Trying the same thing (using filezilla) outside the network is not working, and it's not getting through the firewall.

comment Windows 7 Password Expiration Notification
There's a good powershell script knocking about which emails users to tell them how long until their password expires, if that's any help.

comment How to prevent hackers attacking SQL Server 2008 R2?
You could try using a non-standard port, so instead of 1433 use something else. Note this is not a cure-all security measure though, merely a speed bump...

You can configure something like 1334 which is memorable, but less likely to be subject to brute force attacks.

is the warning due to the fact that the cert is not from a trusted root CA?

comment Recurring virus infection on a domain workstation
the file's legit - its our CRM database software, installed on all machines. I ran a MBAM test on another machine to see if that picked it up, but it didn't find anything. Seems MBAM might not be happy with the way the software works. ESET with latest definitions is fully updated and running, and has not found anything, so seems like MBAM was off the mark. Many thanks for your help.

I didn't run Kaspersky as we have ESET NOD, and seeing as you mentioned that I ran that instead. It didn't find anything.

c:\program files (x86)\ACT\ACT for Windows\ActSage.exe - each time there is an infection it is this file, plus associated registry keys.

I restored the exe from the quarantine and submitted it to virus total. It hasn't detected anything wrong with the exe. virustotal.com/file/…

OK thanks very much for the info, I'll attempt this on monday when we're back in the office. We do have ESET NOD AV, so I'll make sure it goes onto this machine.

Yeah servers have AV on (ESET) I'll run a scan on them to be sure. We're not using Folder redirection or offline files.
