comment Proper path for a website on a dedicated server?
I have added one paragraph to make it clear that the answer suggesting /srv isn't wrong in any way.

comment What's the most widely used pronunciation of the Unix /etc directory?
This is no attempt to answer the question. A sample size of 1 is very small.

comment Does number of hardlinks to a directory correspond to the number of subdirectories in it?
I don't understand - unless you use the -i flag to compare the results, ls won't find any duplicates. That being said, I've never encountered multiple hardlinks to directories (disregarding . and ..) and I'm highly surprised that some tool should use them by design. I wouldn't be surprised if standard tools such as find, ls -R and tar assume this property to hold.

comment ssh - execute script in background if not already running?
More generally: there is no foolproof method to check if a program is already running. Search this site with keywords such as daemontools.

comment ssh login - execute command - exit
In general: write a program that does exactly what the user needs to be able to do, and set it as the user's shell in /etc/passwd. I have used the same principle for CVS servers and other purposes.

comment Find directories that do not contain a directory?
@erikcw: no, this is the beauty of Unix tools: they work on standard input or files if filenames are given on the command line. That allows them to be chained (piped) together.

comment Find directories that do not contain a directory?
@Keiran: find . -type d | grep -v "/bar$" Now the problem is that bar may be a file instead of a directory.
