comment Curl development headers with SSL support for Phusion Passenger 3
At least on my system, CentOS 6, with the repos I have installed, it's libcurl-devel. Didn't fix my problem, but still... :)

comment Find path where PEAR library is installed to place in php.ini?
For those Googlers who land here because they need to know the path to Pear's PHP files: The best approach is to simply execute (on the command line): pear config-get php_dir

comment Limiting CPU/IO usage for linux services
BTW, even renicing exim processes with cron doesn't seem to work. I successfully applied the queue_only_load setting to reduce load on our machine. Further relevant discussion: forums.cpanel.net/f189/nice-exim-172346.html

comment Limiting CPU/IO usage for linux services
This is a good idea, but can you please explain how to use nice and ionice with a Linux service/daemon? I don't know of a way to use nice and ionice with exim; I would love to learn, though! :)

comment How to determine what memory was freed
We are currently monitoring with a slew of different services/programs (some directly relevant to this question, some not) - htop, iostat, istatd, New Relic, Pingdom, JetProfiler (for MySQL monitoring), and our VPS provider's (apparently) home-grown monitoring solution (from which the screenshot above was taken).

comment MySQL MyISAM multi-core optimization
Thanks for your answer. The strange thing is that when the server is performing this resource-intensive task/query, nearly all requests/queries are blocked. In other words, the web app slows to a crawl. The only explanation I can think of is that this resource-intensive query locks enough important tables to render the web app effectively 'frozen' until the query is complete. Can you think of anything else that could be causing the issue?

Fascinating. This is one of those things for which there are MANY solutions, and yours is quite intriguing. Thanks so much for your response. :)

Have you done this before? This seems so simple, but sometimes the simplest solutions turn out to be the most reliable/elegant...
