I am currently employed as an IT security consultant. I frequently code in my spare time and have been deeply involved in computing for as long as I can remember (my earliest memories are navigating my full 4 GB hard drive on Windows 95 and thinking, what is all this junk occupying C:\windows\ and taking up room for all my games? Delete!).

I'd like to share my tips and tricks and anything else I've picked up over the years with the StackExchange community, so I look forward to helping!

Don't forget you can also specify your sources in a chain like: --src 1.2.3.4/30

comment Incredibly slow response when reading from mounted Windows shared network drive within Java application
I don't think it's an issue with your software, it's more likely to be the network or configuration of the export/your SMB client. Try updating Samba and use smbclient to mount the SMB share.

Can you check with iperf what the throughput between these two nodes is?

comment OpenVPN doesn't works with TCP
You will get much better performance out of UDP - why are you trying to use TCP if you can test UDP working?

comment Speed test via command line?
The "upload/download speeds" are relative between two nodes, but you only mention the dedicated server. Please clarify.

comment NTP syncs with local timeserver but not NTP pool servers
Yes I agree with you, I think lower level investigation is needed. Check actual data traffic with tcpdump to confirm it's not a network issue.

comment GNU screen cannot find terminfo entry on HP-UX
Do a strace on screen and see where it stats. If possible, create a symbolic link to inform of the correct location of your terminfo for screen.

comment NTP syncs with local timeserver but not NTP pool servers
I advise following Lada*'s advice on checking logs and dumping network data during an attempted sync.
