Wow, that is an extensive answer, thanks a lot for all the hints for newer methods. Unfortunately I'm on a small embedded Linux board, so I have to search for, compile and install all this tools before, whereas "top" is already available. Anyway: thanks!!!!!

"fixing the ISP" is not an option, all our providers here in Germany make daily disconnect of the DSL lines. Only for some minutes, I guess the reason is to change the IPv4 address. Of course it is also possible to buy an DSL connection with permanent IPv4, which will not be cut, but that's very expensive...

I fully understand your argument and in general you are right, but.... I have some small old servers which simply can't migrate to IPv6, too much effort (I've tried this now the last weeks and gave up). So I need to connect them with an SSH remote tunnel to a central router. There will be a new port opened for each server and that's the reason why I need Port forwarding. e.g. Standard port 80 of IP-alias 1 to port 8001, and port 80 of IP-alias 2 to port 8002...
