comment VP is demanding admin access to PC to install apps - What is a good containment strategy?
Sorry, but I had to downvote for the "false positive" scam. Lying is not professional.

@splattne my guess is that there should be a NSFW warning along with that suggestion!

Rook, this question is not about unix. it is about google-app-engine.

comment How to Apply a .reg file to a ntuser.man file
it does sound archaic to me, even as a software engineer with little windows admin experience. I am clearly out of my comfort zone here, but my general common sense told me our current method was crazy. I will see if i can convince our AD folks here to help out.

Are talking about programming changes to an application that runs against the database, or just updating the database itself?

you haven't mentioned anything specific regarding bandwidth, cpu usage, disk usage, RAM requirements, etc, so i'm not sure how you expect we could give you an answer.

comment Easiest way to send an Email from the command line, using windows 2003 R2
I guess I have to accept that I need to at the very least copy an exe (either blat or powershell) to each machine. If that's the case, then blat is very easy to use. Thanks. I still wonder why MS left this feature out, considering how many other less useful ones they put in to the standard distro.

I have to admit, I was hoping for a built in solution, though Jim's answer seems to imply that was a bit naive of me...

comment Best practices or experience with company wide Username policies and resolving duplicates
ahhh, I might have misled everyone by using the term "my app". It is not so much "my app" as the "app i am responsible for enhancing/supporting". It is closed source software bought from a vendor. There is no room on the user record for any identifier besides a username, which everything else in the DB is tied to, including all the audit tables, security, etc. So for this to work, i'd need to force the user to log in using the GUID, but that breaks the desired policy as well.

Jim, This didn't seem like much of a programming issue as much as a policy issue to me. Nothing I can program can fix the fact that our policy allows accounts to be deleted and then duplicated. I was hoping i could point to some ISO document that forbade this and say "look here, this is why we shouldn't be deleting user accounts just because they leave the company"

unfortunately the app i support/enhance is one of those 'off the shelf' apps that uses username as its primary identifier in all the audit tables, so it has to be unique within the app.
