comment HTTPD server computer freezes up entirely
What are the basic server specs? CPU, men, etc... Can you task to terminal still, Ctrl-shift-f1? Can you restart X, Ctrl-shift-backspace?

comment Apache mod_jk Setting for Tomcat - workers.properties
Sorry, but it's still not clear what exactly you're asking. You want to know the next step? You're encountering an error? Specific error at startup? Can you provide the log section with error? IMHO, mod_proxy_ajp is much easier to configure and work with than mod_jk.

comment Apache2 virtual host: www agnostic (*.hostname.com)
you probably don't need virtual hosts for this if you don't have subdomains. Just set the Listen 80/Listen 443 at the top of the httpd.conf.

I used to work on AIX a ton in the past. I wrote several scripts to detect software on the machine. What shell are you working with, tsh? I think you should have grep right? Do you have awk?

comment Groups as users in LDAP
What other services are you trying to provide this group authorization for? It matters when you work with tools like Apache.

comment from svn to git (+ LDAP + password-less updates + passworded access control)
Jayen, you could setup something hybrid, use Apache & LDAP for general user authentication and deploy a hook to add additional ACLs/group authorization. There are several scripts out there for doing this. One specifically, update-paranoid: git.kernel.org/?p=git/git.git;a=blob;f=contrib/hooks/… .
