comment What are the consequences of an AD group that has as its member a group, that is already a member (Cyclic references)
I guess it depends on the phrase "groups being members of one another", which can be read as referring to circular references, but also non-circular ones. It sounded like you meant there was nothing wrong with groups referencing groups in general, and that you did not actually even address circular references.

comment How can I backup an SQL Server database using Windows Backup?
I have a Windows Server 2008 that is doing a full backup. As far as I can tell it is pulling the databases from SQL Server Express as part of its full backup, since each database says that it was last backed up at the time that that backup runs. This has confused me, since I'm trying to figure out how I've managed to backup these databases, since I can't find a script that's doing it anywhere. I think I will write a script to do it anyway, so that I know it's working and know exactly what I have.

comment Is Ping a reliable way to check if a server is available?
just recently thought an smtp server was down because I couldn't ping it. half hour later, sure enough I realize that while I can't ping it, I can still telnet to it on port 25.

comment What happens inbetween SMTP and POP3?
Thanks. Some questions: what "kind of" server is ISP-SERVER? SMTP? When POP3 is used to download the message, how did the message get into the mailbox initially? SMTP again? When you say "MAIL-SERVER has a mailbox for Dave", is the mailbox a part of SMTP, POP3, or something else? The DNS MX record seems like a key part of what I was missing. Again, many thanks.
