comment Reread partition table without rebooting?
Two times? Do you also run “sync; sync; sync”? ☺ I smell superstition…

comment Why is update-grub unable to find my root device?
Is /etc/mtab a symlink to /proc/mounts (as it should be, nowadays)? If it is, what device does it say is mounted as the root file system? Is that device accessible in the chroot?

comment Where to place my server, configuration and (big) data? /srv? /etc? /usr/local/bin? /home/me/.whatever?
@firda The Debian package base-files adds a /var/local directory.

@firda No, only unchanging files should be in /usr; changing files should be below /var. There is a /var/local directory, I believe. But again, read the FHS and investigate other software. If the data files are primarily served to other systems over the network, /srv might also be a good choice. Again, the FHS gives no easy clear-cut answers, so you’ll have to decide yourself.

comment How to start process as a daemon?
It's not that simple. You should at least do a double fork, and also setsid(). And what about stdout/stderr? Simpler to just use the python-daemon module.
