Let's try to share the bits of knowledge gained during those innumerable hours of programming... Nowadays I use mostly PostgreSQL, C++/Qt, Perl, php on Unix servers.

comment Tell proftp to allow connections only to the users that have permissions in PostgreSQL
You mean checking permissions on postgresql in addition to providing your own users table/view or instead of it? In the latter case how do you get the fields like uid,gid,homedir...?

revised Compute a list of difference between packages installed on two hosts
Fixed typo: it's dpkg --set-selections (plural form). Also added full path to sources.list

The postgres server logs should be consulted to figure out what happened.

comment Backup a big PostgreSQL database continually
pg_dump produces a consistent backup even when the db is being written to. See the description section from its manpage. In theory your custom incremental backup should work even with the huge dataset you have.

Can you show the result of apt-cache policy postgresql-contrib, that may help with the context.

comment How to disable 1 version of PostgreSQL server without uninstalling it
According to the source /usr/share/postgresql-common/PgCommon.pm it's also spelled disabled so the manpage is indeed wrong.

comment How to disable 1 version of PostgreSQL server without uninstalling it
@BartlomiejSkwira: manual worked for me when I had to use it (no auto-start). About disable or disabled, the startup shell script (see /usr/share/postgresql-common/init.d-functions) doesn't really care, if it's not auto it doesn't start.
