comment HOSTS file not overriding DNS
Thanks for that (I setup an IP mapping to a hostname - netbios - used by server b to go to server a, but when pinging that ip, it still goes to server b, also ignoring HOSTS file). P.S. I don't have my logon on this machine, I raised the original question.

Yep, got it. For a public hostname for apps which require it such as vpn servers, must it be a valid domain name (i.e. ending in .com) or a hostname of the server where the AD domain suffix may end in .local?
