comment Tools to profile memory & cpu on Linux
munin seems pretty good, especially since a quick 'sudo apt-get install munin' does the job.

An encrypted home directly is easy to set up and should do what you need.

comment Resolving host is consistently slow
dig returns pretty much instantly. I even have dnsmasq running, and if I don't specify the nameserver argument the response comes back from 127.0.0.1 as expected, using dig. Weird. It's only when I use an http client such as wget or lynx that it slows right down...

I'm guessing there is no right answer to this question, so all reasonable answers get up-votes - but I'll hold out from closing the question until I see an answer with the name of the script I used (which I'll recognise once I see it).

yes, reporting in mb or kb gives the expected answer.

Thanks, what kind of motherboard tweaks do they typically make to suit particular cpu & memory arrangements?

The qualitative compile test is the only one I have, I'm afraid, since I don't have the ability to do side by side comparison anymore. Assume the same processor/ram specs. The general question it about how the other components, other than ram & cpu, and general server architecture influence performance.

Yes, it's a crappy machine. I think it was stored outside for a while too. I can see rust on it. Infact - I'm always a little scared to touch it incase I get an electric shock.

No! BTW - this is on a linux (debian) machine.

comment Max # of threads per CPU
How many threads did you create before the blue screen? At a guess you either ran out of memory, or the cpu was thrashing / context switching.
