comment How can I start nginx via upstart?
I would think that you would want to run using daemon off; so that upstart watches the correct process/PID without the need for the expect fork or post-stop directives. The wiki section describing the daemon option also states "You can use daemon off safely in production mode with runit/daemontools, however you can't do a graceful upgrade.", which I assume is referring to the upgrading to a new binary on the fly feature.

comment nginx - request getting handled by multiple location blocks
Excellent guess, this was exactly the problem! I guess I'd need move the URI of the error files to their own location that gets picked up by a specific location directive to not be handled by proxy_pass, though unfortunately since location directives can't be inside of http directives (only server directives according to the docs) I'd need to include that error location directive into every http directive in every included config.

comment accessing a variable within a previously declared instance of a defined type
@mogsie Not necessarily a parameter passed into a resource, but a variable that has been defined by the other resource whether passed to it or defined within it. From what I can tell so far, it is possible to access a variable within a declared class, but not within a declared resource type. It seems that the only way to accomplish this is to declare a variable in the sites::static scope and pass it to the declared resources, however doing that pretty much defeats the purpose of modularizing things into separate components in the first place.

comment Call Puppet function from Puppet template?
It is possible to use a variable for the name of the template file to load for the template function call within the template? E.g. <%= scope.function_template("sites/$domain/config.erb") %>
