comment Running MySQL on Amazon EC2 with EBS (Elastic Block Store) and Elastic Beanstalk
@cyber86: thanks again for your help. I'm going to accept your answer because it not only helped me sort out the meta issue of whether Elastic Beanstalk is right in my circumstances, but it also helped me figure out the process to set up MySQL on Amazon linux. BTW, I've posted a question on stackoverflow about setting up a post-receive hook to pull from bitbucket. I think it has something to do with permissions, but I'm still too newbie to know why it's not working. Maybe you've encountered this issue before?

@cyber86: as per my edit above, I guess I should take a step back and figure out whether Elastic Beanstalk is the right way to go. I'm not worried about scaling at this point, but it would be nice to have it set up so that it would scale if necessary. Based on what you've written above, it sounds like it IS possible to adapt the Eric Hammond instructions to work with CentOS/RHEL (I'm assuming it's essentially slightly different commands and configuration on CentOS/RHEL and not a lack of functionality). In any event, thanks for taking the time to help solve this!
