comment Can I buy an IP address range without buying from or becoming a member of my regional NIC?
Yes, software is free. You have to pay to get your AS number, to get your uplink via a larger provider, etc. And most of them won't let you use just any old hardware with some free software on it. But for internal routing, you can use whatever you want.

comment Do different rsnapshot retains use the same hard links?
For example, if you have 4 hourly backups, 7 daily ones, 4 weekly and 3 monthly, the last monhtly (monthly.3) is ~4 months old. If you have 18 daily backups, the last one is just 18 days old.

File-wise ... there is no difference. But "daily", usually takes the last hourly folder as daily.0, and monthly takes the last weekly folder as monthly.0. Both are just "cp -L", but the folders are from different time periods.

comment IP TABLES port forwaring corrupts my packets?
Are those values always in the same place (offset)? And are those values in the "data" part of tcp? Checksums get recalculated when dealing with NAT.

What exactly gets corrupted? Have you tried running wireshark on the target machine, to see what the recieved packets look like, and what's wrong/changed?

comment iptables: does a scanner knows if you DROP packets?
Exactly (if all ports were "closed" by DROPping the packets). That's why some scanners (eg. nmap), first do a ping test (if not disabled with -P0)
